How to measure for your new blind.

Before you begin measuring, please note that all the advice on measuring below relates to rectangular windows only and not to doors, bay windows or arch windows etc. Please call us on 1890 200 800 for measuring advice if you have doors, bay windows etc.

One or two VERY IMPORTANT points, before you begin measuring, particularly for roller blinds (including blackout roller blinds). As every blind is custom made to measure, to the size you give us, please take great care when measuring and ordering your blinds as incorrectly specified blinds cannot be returned:

  • The width of the fabric on a roller blind IS NOT the width of the blind! The width of a roller blind is the overall width from the outside of the bracket on one side of the blind, to the outside of the bracket on the other side. When measuring for roller blinds, please note that the fabric width will be approx 3 cm narrower than the width of the blind. If you are in any doubt, please call us on 1890 200 800 and we'll explain in more detail.
  • Our website accepts your measurements in inches, centimetres or millimetres. We manufacture in millimetres so all your measurements are shown in millimetres also, on your receipt. If you state your measurements as 'Recess' measurements, we will make a deduction from your measurements to enable the blind to fit into your window recess. This is explained in further detail below.
  • When ordering blinds for a Velux window, there is no need to measure the window! Instead you will find the relevant code for your Velux window on an identification plate fixed to the head of the window. This plate will become visible when you pull the window completely open to eye level.

Recess size or Exact size? How to decide:

You can choose to have your blind made to fit inside the recess of your window or to fit on the outside of the window recess. In the above videos, the blinds are measured and fitted inside the window recess.

Recess Size:

This is the measurement you need to give us if you want your blind to fit inside your window recess. We will make a deduction from your measurements so your blind will easily fit into your window recess.

Recess size is the most popular choice as nearly all blinds are designed to be fitted within the window recess. Exceptions include blinds made for tilt & turn windows (windows that open in to the room), and roman blinds, which can be manufactured to fit either inside or outside your window recess.

How to get your recess size:

  • Measure the width of your window recess in 3 places (top, middle and end) as shown below. Write down the narrowest width measurement - this is the measurement we will use.
  • Measure the drop of your window recess in 3 places (right side, middle and left side) as shown below. Write down the shortest drop measurement - this is the measurement we will use.

Remember, you do not need to make any deduction from your recess size. We will make this deduction for you!

Note: When measuring for roller blinds please note that the fabric width will be approx 3 cm narrower than the overall blind width.

Exact Blind Size:

This is the measurement you need to give us if you want the blind to hang outside your window recess. We will make your blind exactly to these measurements. PLEASE NOTE: The width of the fabric on a roller blind IS NOT the width of the blind! The width of a roller blind is the overall width from the outside of the bracket on one side of the blind, to the outside of the bracket on the other side. When measuring for roller blinds, please note that the fabric width will be approx 3 cm narrower than the width of the blind.

Exact size is always used when fitting blinds outside the window recess. It may be necessary to fit blinds outside the window recess where the recess is very shallow, or where tilt & turn windows open into the recess.

If measuring for tilt & turn windows (windows that open in to the room), or bay windows, please call us on LOCALL 1890 200 800 (Mon-Fri: 9.00am - 5.30pm & Sat: 10.00am - 2.00pm), and we'll advise you on how to measure for your particular windows.

How to get your exact blind size:

  • Measure the width you would like your blind to cover.
  • Measure the drop you would like your blind to cover.

Remember, we will make no adjustments to your exact measurements!

Hints and advice:

  • Measure in centimetres (cm), to the nearest 0.1cm.
  • Use a steel measuring tape.
  • Look out for window handles, tiles and alarm sensors or anything else that could get in the way of your blind.
  • All our brackets can be top-fixed to the lintel or face-fixed to the window frame.
